Reptiles of Crete

Map of Crete

The island of Crete is the fifth largest in the Mediterranean and ranges from near desert in the east to high-rainfall mountain forests in the west and high altitude desert conditions in the White Mountains south of Hania.

This provides for a wide range of reptiles and amphibians which fill varying ecological niches in all but the most inhospitable of the island's habitats.

The seas are home to three species of sea turtle whilst on land there are snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and terrapins.

Clicking on the links on the left will introduce you to some of those which, as visitors, you are most likely to come across.
