Colour: Olive-grey with dark spots. Tail has regular dark/light stripes |
Range: East Adriatic, Croatia, Albania, Greece, including Crete |
Food: Lizards, mice, grasshoppers and birds. |
Similar in its habits to the leopard snake, the Balkan whip snake (coluber gemonensis) is found in dry, stony places as well as in more marshy areas.
It can bite very fiercely in defence - although many seem to accept an inspection by humans quite placidly!
