The dice snake (natrix tessellata) is a close relative of the British grass snake and is almost always found near either freshwater or the sea.
After sunning itself on the shore, it can swim and remain submerged for long periods of time as it hunts for fish and frogs,
If caught or frightened, the dice snake rarely bites - but it often releases a foul-smelling liquid to try to put its tormentor off!
